Director Zhang Yimou mixes genres in House of Flying Daggers. According to the director, "It's a love story, but also a martial arts film in the form of a romantic and timeless saga. The film takes the viewer on an emotional journey into the heart of passion. You'll see how three people suffer because of their love for the other and how much they can endure. Love tears us apart, yet we are ready to sacrifice everything for it." For this love story, the director once again works with Hero (and 2046) star Ziyi Zhang.

Jin: Why would a blind girl work here?
Mei: Why can't a blind girl work here?
Mei: The flowers displayed here can hardly be called flowers. Real flowers bloom in the wilderness.
Jin: Well said. If you impress me I'll take you to where the real flowers grow.
